Sometime ago, I had an argument with my colleague about the concept behind horsepower. The equivalent of one horse’s pulling power, in the literal sense of the meaning. The argument went on for quite a while. And since I could make sense of what he was explaining, and my point was also valid physics-wise, I told him I understood his point and in fact could argue from both sides.
Brothren and sisthren, that was the winning blow. Argument ceased. How can you argue from both sides, he exclaimed? If you can argue from both sides, then why are we even arguing? Well, turns out he’s one of my best brains in motion so I like to engage him. Atleast, if not for anything, for the you-are-impossible look on his face after such arguments.
Matter-of-factly, I think everyone should have one or two such people in their lives. I’ve enjoyed atleast one of such friends in every stage of my life. Boy! Am I blessed or am I blessed?!. Intellectually sound people and ever ready to engage. It is such friends that make you revisit your encyclopedia and help you look out for loopholes in your designs. They generally come in exciting packages. Most of them wear glasses and have the nerd look. Others just come off as really plain and skinny. They generally look bored in show-off meetings and have no time for unnecessary mingling, or rather see no need for it.
Look out for that one face in your next staff meeting and hit off a conversation. Will ya? Thank me later.
